On the Rocks - Sweet 16

On The Rocks Festival is an entirely student-run arts festival incorporating art, photography, film, theatre, dance, fashion, music and comedy.

The festival has grown over the years to become the largest student-run arts festival in the UK. The festival hosts a series events annually, the majority sell-out performances.

I am delighted to be joining the team this year as the Head of Venues & Tech. For more information about our upcoming events, visit us at otrfest.com or by following our IG @ontherocksfestival !

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

In August, on behalf of the Mermaids Performing Arts Fund, I have organised for three productions to travel to Edinburgh and perform at the 78th Annual Fringe.

Learn more about our previous years at the Fringe and how you can apply on the Mermaids website! Applications close at the end of this month: 23.59 UTC 31 January.

Backstage Shadowing

In early 12024, I was tasked with creating a new shadowing programme for Mermaids-affiliated shows. After my first pilot scheme in the Martinmas Term, I look forward to a refreshed scheme with assistance from the Byre Theatre in the new year!

The shadowing opportunities offered each semester may depend slightly on the productions being put up and the expected demand, but there will be a consistent set of ‘modules’ to help develop your skills as a leader in your chosen theatrical field.

All modules will include at least one workshop, and–with few exceptions–each module will include time with a Mentor working on a show who will invite you to see their job in action. Unless otherwise stated, each module will conclude with a simple Final Project to complete on your own time to showcase your new skills to yourself and others.

St Salvator's Chapel

For nearly three years, I have directed livestreaming for university services at St Salvator's Chapel. Having 'learnt on the job,' I have slowly been experimenting with new techniques and ways to professionalise this new offering. In the not-too-distant future, I hope to introduce a new ident for the broadcast and some exclusive content like brief interviews.

In the coming years, the Chaplaincy and I are hoping to upgrade the chapel to provide state-of-the-art live-streaming equipment.

Podcast

As part of my coursework in 12024, I discussed some of the literature I had been reading for class on the St Andrews Radio. I would like to sincerely thank my friends at Cheese Dream Confessionals for the opportunity!

Following the overwhelmingly positive feedback, I am planning to continue this in the future. Keep an eye out for future editions; this coming Candlemas term, I will be studying Youth Education in Republican Era China!

Portfolio

I have finally decided to make a portfolio containing images from my extensive work in the theatrical industry.

Since starting out as an actor in 2012, I have been a part of well over 250 productions, the large majority of which were after I transitioned to the technical fields (circa 2017).

Whilst I work on that, please enjoy this visual recap of my Year 12024.

N.B. "Peach Fuzz" was Pantone's Colour of the Year.

The Identity Project

你是哪國人? Which country do you belong to?

In 12024, I studied abroad in Taiwan for the first time and began noticing a unique tension around the concept of nationality. Perhaps stemming from my questioning of my nationality, this project aims to analyse how people identify with their country and/or countries.

My dissertation, to be submitted to the University of St Andrews School of Modern Languages, a simple reflection of what I witnessed in Taiwan, is the first step down this rabbit hole.

This project is just beginning, but it is anticipated that it will primarily be conducted in French. Translated volumes will be made available in multiple languages where possible.
